Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects woman's ovaries.



What are the symptoms of PCOS?

  • Increased levels of the hormone androgen which can cause excessive hair growth, acne and weight gain

  • Not ovulating, which can cause irregular periods and trouble conceiving

  • Enlarged ovaries which may also contain fluid filled sacs

How is PCOS diagnosed?


You have to have at least 2 of the above symptoms present in order to be diagnosed with PCOS.


What causes PCOS?


PCOS is caused by abnormal hormone levels in the body, however what causes the abnormal hormone level is unknown.


How is PCOS treated?


PCOS can only be managed. You can have medication to help with hair growth, period problems and acne, and fertility medicines to help you conceive. The majority of women with PCOS do go on to conceive, although it can take longer.
